Men and Women Pay The Same For Life Cover
Since the beginning of 2013 the European court has forced life insurance companies to charge men and women the same life cover premiums even though on average women live longer than women and should have lower premiums.

What the insurers can still do however is alter the premiums based upon your occupation. It has long been the practice to increase premiums for jobs that carry an increased level of risk, in particular where applicants work offshore or underground. There has been speculation that this might now be used to target gender by rating the more male or more female orientated occupations in the same way but we haven’t seen this practice deployed to any major extend yet.

Smoking Raises The Costs Of Life Cover
Smoking damages your health and (on average) smokers don’t live as long as non-smokers. The effect of smoking on death rates is less pronounced for younger lives and more pronounced for older lives particularly where the smoking has been a habit for many years. The tables of rates show the relative differences between non-smokers and smokers, (which now included e-cigarettes). Interestingly you only need to stop smoking for 12 months to get the non-smoker premiums, even if you’ve smoked for 30 years until that point, so it’s far from a perfect rating system (shopping around is best).
